French Shepherd’s Pie

Ingredients:

• 1lb 2oz (500g) minced beef
• 9 fl oz (¼ litre) milk
• 2oz (60g) butter
• 10 potatoes
• 5½oz (150g) parmesan
• 2 onions
• garlic
• parsley
• salt, pepper.
• dried herbs
• nutmeg.

Method:

Peel and cut the potatoes into cubes and place them in a microwave safe dish. Fill with water, add the dried mixed herbs and salt. Cover and put in the microwave for 10 minutes on 900 watts.
Remove the potatoes, mash them with a potato masher, and place in a large bowl with the milk and mix together. Add the diced butter, salt,
pepper and nutmeg. Mix again.
Brown the meat in a frying pan with the onions chopped into round slices, the garlic, parsley, and pepper. Add a slice of sandwich bread soaked in milk to stop the meat drying out.
Pour half of the mash into a glass gratin dish that has been greased with butter. Cover with the meat and the rest of the mash. Sprinkle with Parmesan cheese and put in a traditional oven for 15 minutes.
