The Pyrex story begins with light bulbs and railways! Corning Inc. produced the first light bulb for Thomas Edison in 1879 and developed the heat resistant borosilicate glass to withstand extremely high or low temperatures for use in railroad signal lanterns for the American Railway Company in 1912. As an experiment, Corning research physician James Littleton asked his wife to bake a cake in an adapted base of a glass lamp. She did it, the glass withstood the heat of the oven and the cake was perfectly cooked. First bakeware item made of glass was born. Pyrex launched its first product in 1915, a pie dish sold for $0.69.
